Scoliosis 1 (PMA 3 credits)
DESCRIPTION
Did you know that scoliosis is much more than the lateral convex rib cage curves?
Learn the hallmarks of scoliosis and some simple quick tests to sharpen your eye and skills for working with your clients and classes. Learn exercises to emphasize the need for trunk balance in the neurodevelopmental positions. Learn the importance of breathing exercises for scoliosis and how to get the breath going.
Come away with exercises and concepts immediately usable for yourself and your clients.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, participants will:
1. Better understand the physical characteristics of scoliosis
2. Learn simple tests to identify scoliosis
3. Learn Pilates-based exercise applications for scoliosis
4. Learn the importance of the breath in relation to scoliosis
5. Learn exercises to facilitate fascia-focused breathing

The Pelvic Core (PMA 3 credits)
DESCRIPTION
PELVIC CORE: Focus on the therapeutic application of the Pilates Method in balancing the pelvis in relation to the spine and lower extremities. Learn mat and reformer exercises and strategies to address pelvic obliquity and its ramifications into the spine and lower extremities, with the goal of a pain free pelvis and improved gait.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this workshop, participants will better:
1. describe the skeletal anatomy of the pelvis, with its gender differences, and its relationship to the spine and lower extremities
2. explain the physical dynamics of the pelvis
3. describe the best postural positions and relationship of the head, back, pelvis and lower extremities in relation to the center of gravity
4. explain the importance of the intervertebral discs, and the impact of posture upon their health
5. facilitate the use of the anticipatory inner unit and describe its importance in the stability of the low back
6. apply the Beighton criteria for hypermobility with their clients
7. describe the role of the use of the Pilates Method in lumbar stabilization
8. describe the neurodevelopmental sequence and its importance to gait
9. learn and experiment with Pilates –based mat exercises specifically designed to promote balancing of imbalanced pelvic musculature and so improve low back stability and optimal lower extremity mechanics.

Breast Cancer Physical Restoration (PMA 6 credits)
DESCRIPTION
Learn facts about breast cancer, and about the foundation for postural restoration that serves as a gateway to a complete physical program. Educate yourself about lymphedema, the impacts of reconstructive treatment as well as Pilates-based mat, Reformer, Trapeze Table and MOTR exercises to promote optimal healing.
OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to better:
1. Describe statistics on the incidence and risk of breast cancer acquisition for females;
2. Describe lifestyle changes for breast cancer risk reduction;
3. Describe the positive link between exercise and breast cancer survival;
4. Describe coping mechanisms that promote wellbeing;
5. Describe the hallmarks of physical restoration after treatment for breast cancer;
6. Perform a 3 general arm range of motion self-tests;
7. Explain the concept of anticipatory inner unit in trunk control focusing on core facilitation and control;
8. Explain the physical impact on the abdominals in the TRAM flap reconstruction procedure;
9. Learn the role of active assistive range of motion exercises for the arms;
10. Describe the imagery of the golden ring in restoring arm function;
11. Define lymphedema, its symptoms, its prevention, and suggestions for management;
12. Learn specific goals for a restoration program;
13. Learn the guidelines and progression stages for a complete physical program;
14. Perform a chest wall lymphatic massage and self-breast exam;
15. Learn Pilates-based Upper Core/ Restoration exercises on the Mat, Reformer, Trapeze Table and MOTR
