Exhibition Title: Transforming Thanyaburi: Creative & Innovative Urban Futures in Pathum Thani
Artist/Organization: UDDI, TDS, Thammasat University
Exhibition Dates: 5 - 25 March, 2022 - 6060 Arts Space | Black Building
Exhibition Description:
With more than 55% of the world’s population now living in cities, and a projected increase to more than two thirds by 2050, cities face enormous challenges now and in the coming decades. Urbanisation in Thailand is highly disproportionate, dominated by Bangkok which accounts for some 80% of the total urban area in the country and almost 33% of the urban population. The two exhibited projects highlight some of the significant challenges and opportunities associated with surrounding provinces, specifically Pathum Thani, which play a key role in the social-economic peri-urban development of the city.
The UD223 Urban Intervention Studio of the second year, Urban Design & Development International (UDDI) programme analysed and developed strategies for improving the urban condition of Khlong Rangsit in Thanyaburi District in Pathum Thani. The projects thoroughly investigated the inter-relations between the physical, economic, social, temporal, environmental, and legal dimensions of the Khlong Rangsit area. From analysing these ecologies, students identified key strategic opportunities to promote new ways of engaging with the urban commons in the production of community, new economic activities, identity, and a learning city.
The UD351 Creative Cities elective course of the third year UDDI programme studied the topics of Creative Cities and Creative Economies from various theoretical angles, aiming to catch the intersections between creativity, contemporary macroeconomic dynamics, inequalities, development and city-making. The perspective on the local territories were challenged through the development of two reality-based projects: the design of a Creative City in the Thanyaburi District, and the subsequent design of Gaming Simulations on these projects to promote public engagement in the real scenarios by citizens and stakeholders.
