Absolutely Unsure is a multidiciplinary fine art exhibition by 6 emerging artists alumni from Bangkok University. Curated by Prapon Kumjim.

Opening reception in the presence of Mr. Petch Osathanugrah, President of Bangkok University, as guest of honour.

The exhibition will be on view at YenakArt Villa from the 1st to the 31st of September 2016.

นิทรรศการ Absolutely Unsure (ความไม่แน่นอนที่แน่นอน) คือการนำเสนอผลงานศิลปะโดย บัณฑิตจบใหม่สี่ท่านและ ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ ที่มากด้วยประสปการณ์อีกสองท่าน โดยที่ทุกคนเป็นศิษย์เก่ามหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ภาควิชาทัศนศิลป์ คณะศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ ชื่อของนิทรรศการเป็นคำกิริยาสองคำ ที่มีความย้อนแย้งกัน ในแบบที่ไม่น่าจะเป็นไปได้ แต่ในบริบทสังคมร่วมสมัยแบบไทยๆ บวกกับกระแสโลกาภิวัตน์ที่เซลฟี่และการอัปโหลดสเตตัสเป็นปกติจริตของมนุษย์ยุคปัจจุบัน ศิลปินกลุ่มนี้กำลังสะท้อนประเด็นที่หลากหลายและปัจจัยของความเป็นยุคสมัยที่เราอาจจะยังไม่เคยเข้าใจมาก่อน อาทิเช่น การตีความ เรื่องเล่าที่มาของความเป็นไทย ความเป็นปัจเจกบุคคล เพศสภาพ เพศสภาวะเป็นต้น
บัณฑิตที่จบจากมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ มีหลักสูตรที่แตกต่างจากสถาบันศิลปะชั้นนำในประเทศไทย สิ่งที่แตกต่างอย่างโดดเด่นและน่าสนใจคือ ในความเป็นสหสาขาของม.กรุงเทพ จะไม่มีแขนงวิชาเอก และจะเน้นการฝึกฝนที่จะเล่นแร่แปรธาตุ ผลิตผลงานที่วิเคราะห์แนวคิดพร้อมกับการปฏิบัติ คู่ขนานวิธีคิดแบบสากลของศิลปะร่วมสมัย (Contemporary Art)
· ผลงานของ ชุติกาญจน์ แก่นแก้ว “Decay” เป็นประติมากรรมที่ถูกนำเสนอในรูปแบบสื่อผสม สีสันของผลงานถูกกำหนดด้วย หลักการของระบบสี CMYK มาสร้างเป็นผลงาน 3 มิติ

· ผลงานของ กัลยารวิศ พูลสวัสดิ์ “ฉันเป็นอย่างที่ฉันเป็น” นำเสนอภาพถ่ายบุคคลที่เน้นความงามความคลุมเคลือทางเพศสภาพระหว่างหญิงรักชาย และ หญิงรักหญิง

· ผลงานของ ณัฐเขษมชัย ลีลาพัฒนสุข “เรื่องของผม” เป็นดิจิตอล แอนนิเมชั่น และภาพเขียน ที่เล่าถึงประสบการณ์วัยเด็กที่ฝังใจ การผูกปมในจิตใจ และนำไปสู่การคลายปมดังกล่าว

· ผลงาน ธีรเสฏฐ์ จิรธำรงรัตน์ “เปลี่ยนแปลง” เป็นประติมากรรมการจำลองมอเตอร์ไซต์และเครื่องมือที่ผลิตจากไม้สัก เพื่อสะท้อนความหลงใหลของวัตถุและค่านิยมของวัยรุ่น

ณัฐพล สวัสดี เคยได้รับรางวัล Brand New ปี 2556 สำหรับศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่โดดเด่น ณัฐพลมีความสนใจเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์และตำนานของสังคม ผลงานในนิทรรศการนี้จะเป็นงานจิตรกรรมและภาพวาดกึ่งนามธรรมที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากเงาที่ปรากฏขึ้นรอบๆ อนุสาวรีย์ในเวลาต่างๆ ของวัน ส่วน ลัทธพล ก่อเกียรติตระกูล เคยได้รับรางวัล Finalist 2016 Sovereign Art Prize (Hong Kong foundation) ในนิทรรศการนี้ ลัทธพล จะนำเสนองานจิตรกรรมที่เน้นกระบวนการขูดลอกวัสดุศิลปะ โดยใช้ น้ำมัน Linseed สารเคลือบ และกระดาน เป็นต้น เพื่อแสดงธาตุแท้ที่เปราะบางแต่งดงามของวัสดุนั้น ๆ ผลงานอีกชิ้นคือ ประติมากรรมภาพถ่ายที่ลัทธพลได้ถ่ายภาพด้านหลังของกระดาษอัดรูปจากร้านอัดรูป เพื่อนำเสนอธาตุแท้ของความเป็นวัตถุภาพถ่ายนั้นๆ
นิทรรศการ Absolutely Unsure คือการตีกรอบปรากฏการณ์ร่วมสมัยของความงามและเสน่ห์ของความเพื้ยนที่อาจจะสามารถเข้าใจได้ในกรุงเทพเท่านั้น

Absolutely Unsure presents a group of four fresh graduates and two more seasoned graduates from Bangkok University’s Visual Art department. The exhibition title is an oxymoron that is when two words with contradictory meaning are placed next to one another. Most of the time it should not make sense but within the context of Thai contemporary culture, many contradictions and paradoxes appear naturally in our everyday encounters. In our current age of unashamed selfies and banal social-media broadcasts, these young artists reflect relevant voices of their generation. Interpretations from the grand narrative ideals of Thainess, the awkward generation gaps, notions of gender and individuality are the concerns being negotiated in this exhibition.

Unlike many graduates from Thailand’s leading art academies, these artists have embarked on an alternative path which may appear peculiar to the national tradition. Interestingly, they have been trained in a kind of artistic alchemy with critical practice that utilises the global vocabulary of contemporary art. The works include a range of materials and mediums such as Chutikan Kaenkaew’s Decay sculptures that derived from pixelated commercial CMYK graphic printing process that transforms rotten fruit into desirable objects. Kanyarawit Phoolsawat’s I Am What I Am, Giclee photographic print, are portraits that blur gender stereotypes between female heterosexuals, metrosexuals and homosexuals. Natkasemchai Leelapattanasuk’s My Business digital animation and drawings trace memories of his dysfunctional childhood and fickle personal insecurities. Theeraseth Jirathumrongrat’s Transform teak wood sculpture, with tool kits and several intricate parts reference a motorcycle that had been a core component in his youth.

Nuttapon Sawasdee was selected for Brand New 2013, a prestigious Thai award for emerging artists his multidisciplinary conceptual practice often investigate aspects of history and social myths. He will exhibit semi-abstract paintings and drawing that was inspired by observations of shadow cast by monuments at different times of day. Latthapon Korkiatarkul, a finalist for the 2016 Sovereign Art Prize (Hong Kong foundation) will show his process-based tactile paintings that strips the very nature of professional art materials like linseed oil, varnish and board. His conceptual photographs depict ideas of the photographic paper as the literal object in the photograph. Latthapon’s creative practice illustrates his obsession with the often overlooked details and how those visual qualities can be re-evaluated. Absolutely Unsure frames a kind of contemporary beauty and absurdities that perhaps only makes sense in Bangkok.
