World in Motion Bangkok

World in Motion Bangkok is the 3 rd film in the World in Motion documentary series and first city in Asia. Interviews with visual artists and communicators from a diverse range of backgrounds –educators, painters, street artists, journalists, design studios and cultural institutions – reveal a vibrant culture that builds upon a unique historic identity and rich visual tradition. A panel discussion and Q&A session following the premiere of the segment will bring you face-to-face with some of the interviewees from the film and invite you to share your experiences and feedback on how Bangkok’s distinctive identity as a city and community influences the work of visiting and resident creatives.

World in Motion Documentary Series
World in Motion / Visual Culture in the Making is a documentary film series created and co-produced by New York based director/producers Graham Elliott and Roswitha Rodrigues. Inspired by their award-winning documentary New York in Motion, the series takes the concept around the world and investigates how local and cultural heritage creates a unique frame of visual reference, that is expressed, reinforced and passed on in design and communication arts. Images and visuals are often able to bypass the conscious mind and create an ‘instinctive’ sense of familiarity and reality – or the violation of such. Favored not only by modern communication technology, but by its immediate accessibility and emotional impact, visual expression is especially successful in transcending divides in today’s multi-cultural environment. Realizing relationships and cultural differences between form, function and meaning of our visual vocabulary becomes revealing, and ultimately essential for all participants in our global discourse – the artist as active contributor, as well as the ‘listener’, the viewer. In a new format of documentary investigation, the World in Motion project aims to initiate and share a learning and discover process by weaving a diverse collection of documentary vignettes featuring interviews with local visual artists and communicators around the world into a tapestry of original and thoughtful reflections. Juxtaposing the accounts encourages to question the ‘obvious’ and holds up a mirror to visual storytellers and audiences alike. It presents an intriguing opportunity to become aware of what we often take for granted, our own cultural context, and builds the foundation for deliberate engagement and mindful choices using – and coining – new vocabulary within our global and sub-global visual culture.
