Limbic Release Part One and panel discussion curated by Kridpuj Dhansandors is a public program in conjunction with the exhibition Shadow Dancing: Where Can We Find a Silver Lining in Challenging Times? on display between 17 March 2022 - 5 June 2022 at the Jim Thompson Art Center.
.
Four short films program from Thai and Taiwan artists, begins with the interrogation of the Land God through divination blocks who witnessed the indigenous massacre in Hakka village, northern part of Taiwan, then a journey back to the desolated indigenous village via the memory of an Atayal man who was dispelled from his hometown since the Chiang Kai-shek’s era. Not only is the overlapping of past and present reflected in these two stories, but also in the next two short films with the Thai narratives, where we are taken on a trip down the memory lane of the film director’s mother’s own unknowingly propagandized childhood versus the recent enlightened self. Last but not least, we follow Rawai villagers during their stay at the sacred Bon Island in Phuket, to fulfil their vows to the ancestor spirit. Albeit hundreds of miles in distance, eerie voice and soundscape have been captured in the documentary, coincidentally just before the 2010 Thai military crackdown, giving the impression that a supernatural phenomenon was caught on tape whereby the remote island spirits were somehow negotiating with people in the chaotic capital.
