Event Information

ABSTRACT:

Following Moriyama by Vithaya is an ode to his inspiration of Daido Moriyama. Vithaya has always had an interest in photographing in Black and White; he sees through monochrome scale, and interplays geometry with light to create compositions. Without having known Moriyama, Vithaya was an avid black and white photographer. Upon discovering Japanese Street Photographer Daido Moriyama, Vithaya’s work began to morph into something larger. Taking from the themes and compositional notes of Moriyama, Vithaya infuses his own philosophy and beliefs into his works. One can consider this as an attempt to continue the narrative of Moriyama himself; through the lenses of a Thai-Indian Photographer. Though unlike Moriyama, who one may consider his documentation as expression; Matracha sees his work as “experimental documentation” or other words; expressive memories.

The following works is a collection of photographs taken over a series of many years; Vithaya, has always had an interest in Japanese cultures and cityscapes. The collected photograph spans over 5 years of various family trips to different places in Japan. Unlike color photographs that may have instantaneous narrative; Vithaya’s work is more abstract, and invites the viewers to find their own meaning in the work. Vithaya’s work is a collection of expressive memories that he found a ‘je ne sais quoi’ (something unexplainable) that requires a certain sentiment to document; the narrative is hidden between the blurred lines of the photographer and subject; though, what Vithaya is attempting to communicate is that memory.

In ‘Following Moriyama; an expression for you, dad' is an invitation to see the world in Black and White, just as Vithaya and Moriyama do. Vithaya, who has always shot in black and white, felt a universal connection to master Moriyama who spent his lifetime photographing in Black and White. Therefore, this exhibition is an invitation for viewers to express themselves uniquely. Vithaya hopes this exhibition will inspire people to find expression in non-traditional ways. Regardless of Black and White, Vithaya advocates for expression, and hopes that one day; one may also find their inspiration, just as Vithaya did with Moriyama.
