A monthly cultural studies session hosted by university lecturer and author Viriya Sawangchot. This month will on the theme of '(Cold)War of Memories' with an interesting documentary film, The Face of Enemy (2009).
Screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a casual discussion (another short film will be screening before discussion).
THE FACE OF THE ENEMY
A documentary that tells the story of the Vietnamese who fought in what one side calls 'the American War' and the other side calls 'the Vietnam War'. Whilst countless have been told from the American point of view, very little has been heard from the other side. In the film, the Vietnamese veterans and their families have the chance for the first time to recall the experiences that transformed and changed their lives. The film is built from over 150 hours of interviews and never seen archive material.
ERIK PAUSER
A Swedish director, producer and visual artist. He has become known from the film The Face of the Enemy. He has just finished another documentary film about indigenous people and rainforest in Malaysia, The Borneo (2016).
VIRIYA SAWANGCHOT
A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
