นิทรรศการนี้อภิปรายประเด็น “acculturation” การปรับตัว (ประยุกต์) เข้ากับศูนย์กลาง (หรือสภาพแวดล้อมวัฒนธรรม ใหม่ new cultural environment) ผ่านสมมุติฐานของคนนอกวัฒนธรรม(หลัก) ในมิติของทักษะการซึมซับ (absorption) การเอาตัวรอด และการสร้างสถานะของบุคคลหน้าใหม่ทางสังคมนำไปสู่การสร้างสรรค์กระบวนการทางศิลปะร่วมสมัย

หากพิจารณาในบริบทของการปรับประยุกต์ดังกล่าวข้างต้น โลกศิลปะร่วมสมัย อุปมาอุปมัยได้กับโลกของการปรับตัวเข้าหาสิ่งแปลกใหม่ และการแสวงหาวัฒนธรรมที่ตกสำรวจ ในการเรียนรู้พฤติกรรม ทัศนคติ และความคิด ผ่านการศึกษาผลผลิตทางวัฒนธรรม ศิลปินจึงเป็นกลุ่มบุคคลที่มีลักษณะพิเศษที่มีความไวต่อการปรับประยุกต์เข้ากับสิ่งแวดล้อมใหม่ หัวข้อดังกล่าวจึงกลายเป็นการสลับบทบาทของมุมมองบุคคลภายในและบุคคลภายนอก ตลอดจนการอภิปรายอาณาเขต วัฒนธรรมหลักของศิลปะร่วมสมัย

ศิลปิน จักกาย ศิริบุตร เจษฎา ตั้งตระกูลวงศ์ และ ปิยทัต เหมทัต ถ่ายทอดประสบการณ์ และการตีความหมายประเด็นดังกล่าวผ่านรูปแบบทางศิลปะที่แตกต่างกันออกไป จักกายเลือกนำเสนอมุมมองของผู้ใช้แรงงานต่างด้าวในประเทศไทยผ่านการสร้างผลงานการปักผ้า เพื่อนำเสนอเรื่องราว ประสบการณ์ทางสังคมกลุ่มชนชาวพม่า ตลอดจนการเปิดเผยมุมมองความรู้สึกที่มีต่อสถานการณ์ดังกล่าว เจษฎาอาศัยประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวในการซึมซับวัฒนธรรมใหม่ของล้านนา โดยการสังเกตและหยิบยืมรูปแบบลักษณะผลงานพื้นถิ่นมาประยุกต์ใช้ในบริบทศิลปะร่วมสมัย ปิยทัตตีความการปรับตัวภายใต้สิ่งแวดล้อมใหม่จากแรงบันดาลใจวัตถุจากนอกโลก (อุกกาบาต) ผ่านผลงานภาพยนตร์ ใช้ขบคิดถึงสภาวะสิ่งแวดล้อมไม่ที่คุ้นเคย

นิทรรศการนี้จึงเป็นการนำประเด็นนำดังกล่าวมาแลกเปลี่ยน และการเรียนรู้ร่วมกันภายใต้สาระของการผสมผสานวัฒนธรรม ในมุมมองที่หลากหลายที่เป็นหัวใจสำคัญของศิลปะในศตวรรษที่ 21

At the heart of this exhibition is the idea of acculturation, or an attempt of a cultural outsider to adapt to the central or a new cultural environment that requires cultural absorption and survival skills, and how a newcomer builds social status. This idea also appropriately applies to the creative process of contemporary art.

The world of contemporary art is about adapting to novel things and identifying unidentified cultures through learning about others’ behaviors, attitudes and thoughts as represented in cultural products. Artists are therefore a kind of people who are quick to adaptation to a new environment. This has led to the switching of perspectives between insiders and outsiders and the discussion on the territory and mainstream culture of contemporary art.

Jakkai Siributr, Jedsada Tangtrakulwong and Piyatat Hemmatat have interpreted “acculturation” for their artistic expressions in different directions. Jakkai has looked through the eye of immigrant laborers in Thailand and has made embroideries that tell the life stories of Burmese immigrants and their attitudes and feelings toward immigration. Jedsada has drawn from his personal experience in acculturating to the Lanna culture and has observed and borrowed from Lanna folk arts for his interpretation in a contemporary art context. Piyatat addresses adaptation to a new environment with his inspiration from objects from outer space (meteorites) in a film that contemplates unfamiliar surroundings.

“Continuum: Acculturating” aims to exchange ideas on this topic and create a platform for mutual learning in the context of cultural integration and diverse perspectives, which are key to contemporary art in the 21st century.
