Since a very long time, plants and many kinds of flowers have taken important roles in human cultures. Plants express fertility, beauty, and prosperity, but also transience. Nevertheless, people still often use flowers as symbols of kindness, purity and sincerity of heart.
In my brief residency in Bangkok, I looked for any kinds of human social interaction which would involve flowers. Then I found an act of gratitude and respect that was poured into Phuang Malai, a traditional Thai flower garland. Phuang Malai are usually presented when praying, used in religious ceremonies and given to elders as a symbol of respect on special occasions. The kinds of flowers being used in Phuang Malai are not only fragrant, beautiful, and bright-colored, they also carry felicitous meanings behind their names. This made an impression to me that people in Thailand are still holding on to their tradition tightly.
During my research, I recorded my findings about flowers and Phuang Malai along with some facts in a series of drawings and sketches. As a result, I made an attempt to arrange my own version of Phuang Malai using drawings on paper.

พืชและดอกไม้มีบทบาทสำคัญมากในวัฒธรรมมนุษย์ และยังแสดงถึงความอุดมสมบูรณ์ ความงาม ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง แต่ก็ยังสามารถสื่อถึงความไม่จีรังอีกด้วย ทว่ายังไงก็ตามผู้คนก็มักจะใช้ดอกไม้เป็นสื่อของ ความอ่อนโยน ความบริสุทธิ์ และความจริงใจ
ในระยะเวลาสั้นๆที่ได้มาใช้ชีวิตและทำงานศิลปะในกรุงเทพนั้น ฉันได้มองหาการปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมผู้คนที่มีดอกไม้เป็นส่วนร่วม ฉันจึงได้เห็นการความให้เกียรติ และความเคารพที่ถูกเรียงร้อยไว้ในพวงมาลัย ซึ่งการจัดดอกไม้แบบหนึ่งของไทย
พวกมาลัยมักถูกนำมาใช้ในการกราบไหว้ พิธีทางศาสนา และมอบให้แก่ผู้ใหญ่ เพื่อเป็นสัญญาลักษณ์ของความเคารพในโอกาสพิเศษ ซึ่งฉันพบว่าดอกไม้ที่นำมาใช้ในพวงมาลัยนั้นไม่ได้มีเพียงกลิ่นที่หอม ความสวยงาม และสีสันที่สดใส แต่ยังมีความหมายดีๆภายใต้ชื่อพวกนั้นอีกด้วย และนี่เป็นสิ่งหนึ่งที่ทำให้ฉันประทับในคนไทย ที่ยังมีการยึดมั่นต่อวัฒธรรมอย่างเหนียวแน่น
ผลของการค้นคว้าของฉันนั้น คือการบันทึกชนิดของดอกไม้ที่มักจะเห็นในพวงมาลัยพร้อมกับข้อมูลบางส่วนและภาพสเก็ตต่างๆ และฉันยังพยายามจัดพวงมาลัยในแบบของฉันเองด้วยลายเส้นของฉันเองอีกด้วย
