Asia Centre is pleased to announce the launch of its Saturday monthly seminar series starting this February. The goal of the Seminar Series is to convene a local forum for cross-disciplinary multi-dimensional interaction to discuss issues facing us in the region and beyond.
Each seminar will be centred on a core theme or a hot topic issue. We will be featuring speakers from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, who will draw on their own personal experiences to show how the theme or topic has shaped their work. Speakers will have 30 - 45 mins to present followed by an interactive discussion and Q&A with the audience.
This monthly seminar series happens on a Saturday and is designed to bring people together in a laid back social setting, it’s Saturday afterall.
To start off the Seminar Series we will be commemorating World Social Justice Day by focusing on conflict, resolution and the prospects of reconciliation in Kachin State in Myanmar. Kachin State is one of the few remaining terrains of on-going fighting in Myanmar in 2016. We will begin by looking at the roots and historical context of the Kachin conflict before discussing the intersectionality between the ethnic conflict and socio-political as well as religious dimensions.
Our speaker Dr Karin Dean has extensive experience researching the conflict on the ground. She also worked with the Henry Dunant Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a second track conflict resolution organization, which tried to bring the three parties to conflict together to facilitate a peace process. She will share her fieldwork experience as well her insight into the conflict resolution process.
