Let’s BAB
Artists: Annee Olofsson, Choi Jeong Hwa, Dow Wasiksiri, Ralf Tooten, Paolo Canevari, Sakarin Krue-on, and Yayoi Kusama
With the aim of Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation to bring art to a wide audience, the foundation presents the exhibition Let’s BAB with works by multinational artists to pave a way to our coming Bangkok Art Biennale in 2020.
This exhibition includes Yayoi Kusuma’s iconic polka-dotted pumpkins, Sakarin Krue-On’s black & white film Tha Tien: The Guardian Giants VS. The Super Virtuous Man (2018), inspired by the legendary tale of quarreling giants at Wat Pho (Temple of Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). Differs from the last event, in Let’s BAB, the film plays on loop in a proper screening room to create alternated experience. Not only Krue-On’s work that challenges the mode of presentation, but also Paolo Canevari’s Monuments of the Memory, the Golden Room (2018). The work was exhibited at Sala Kanparien (Sermon Hall), Wat Prayoonwongsawat – had a dialogue with religious elements in the temple. For this time, the work is reinterpreted by its new positioning and context. Photographs by Anneè Olofsson, Dow Wasiksiri, and Ralf Tooten are also featured to reflect contemporary social issues and personal perspectives. Choi Jeong Hwa presents some major works of his Happy Happy Project (2018) series presenting paradoxical world of superficial happiness and beyond kitsch. Notably, Choi turns his Basket Tower (2018) into a new work Gather Together (2019) juxtaposed with Ash Stupa (2019).
