JUST HUMAN
Solo exhibition by Myrtille Tibayrenc
6 August - 30 September 2022
Mini Xspace gallery, Bangkok
Opening Party: Saturday August 6th (3PM - 5PM)
“The mysteries of humanity are revealed in paintings.”
Said by French painter Myrtille Tibayrenc, who painted with techniques influenced by classical painting. Inspired by the mystery of the memories contained in the original images she compiled. Myrtille had previously participated in the Painting X group exhibition in 2021.
The Xspace Gallery is pleased to present Myrtille’s latest solo exhibition, JUST HUMAN, to be displayed on both floors of mini Xspace.
On the first floor, an extensive series of recent oil paintings on wood in soft acid tones evokes the fragility of humankind. For this new set, Myrtille painted some close friends, family, and images yielded from the internet and social media profiles.
There is no one concept represented by this body of work, but instead a rhizomatic responses to human diversity. Greek sculptures, vintage stars, androgynous models, or anonymous people form the cast for Myrtille’s new theatre of human emotions.
The single format and material, as well as a very limited palette, unifies the works which can be also seen as one. Painted simultaneously over a three months period. The artist likes to see them as intimate thoughts taking diverse shapes. These allegories are reflections on our contemporary society, in which individualism isolates us.
On the second floor, small works on canvas were produced to make mini animations or “gifs” to participate in an online exhibition for the LIV ID collective last year. Myrtille started making these paintings inspired by the mystic visions of Teresa of Avila. She reflects on the old church paintings which were made to tell stories for illiterate people. At times these paintings look like comic strips, which was the inspiration for these works.
