This exhibition introduces Swiss-Tibetan artist Tashi Brauen (b. 1980), featuring his latest works on paper. Brauen's interest lies in observing the characteristics of objects in relation to people and everyday materials. He combines amorphous structures with geometrical forms. "I am interested in working with common materials and transforming them into a new form. It's an attempt to give a new view on different contemporary materials and shapes which are surrounding us."
At the heart of Brauen's practice is a study about materials and their surfaces reacting with different interventions. "When I use a new material it’s always an experiment. I start with bending and folding the new material, observing its characteristics. At the end my intention is to keep the interventions to a minimum."
For his show at the Serindia Gallery in Bangkok Tashi Brauen is using paper to materialize this process. He will show the photo work Untitled (photo cardboard), 2016. Characteristic of the used material is the rough texture of the photo cardboard. Hardly any of the angles meet each other exactly. It would have been simple to enhance the precision through image processing, however, Brauen opts for a mere appearance of geometry in the aesthetics of a rendering.
The work's "There is a crack in everything No.1" and "There is a crack in everything No.2" is Brauen's latest work. The work was developed from failures and coincidences in his studio through seeing an aesthetic in tears and ruptures in cardboard. The spontaneous aspect of tearing is similar to that in painting in that it has a direct character, and that an immediate reaction can follow.
Tashi Brauen lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. After attending HGKZ (the former Zurich University of the Arts), he graduated from Institut-Kunst, fhnw, Basel, in 2010. He has exhibited widely in galleries and museums in Switzerland, France and the USA, at institutions such as Kunsthaus Steffisburg (2016), Kunstmuseum Thun (2015), Kunstmuseum Bern (2013), FABRIKculture in Hégenheim (2013), Stadtgalerie Bern (2012), Centre PasquArt in Biel (2012) and Museum Bärengasse in Zurich (2012).

บราเอน สนใจเรื่องการสังเกตคุณสมบัติของวัตถุในความสัมพันธ์กับผู้คนและวัสดุที่พบเห็นในชีวิตประจำวัน เขาได้นำโครงสร้างที่ไม่มีรูปร่างกับรูปทรงเรขาคณิตมาผสมผสานกัน "ผมสนใจทำงานกับวัสดุทั่วๆไป และกลายมันไปสู่รูปทรงใหม่ ผมพยายามให้มุมมองใหม่แก่วัสดุและรูปร่างร่วมสมัย ต่างๆ ที่อยู่รอบตัวเรา"
หัวใจในการทำงานของเขา คือการศึกษาตัววัสดุและพื้นผิว และปฏิสัมพันธ์ที่มีต่อการแทรกแซงลักษณะต่างๆ “ทุกครั้งที่ผมเริ่มทำงานกับวัสดุตัวใหม่ มันเหมือนเป็นการทดลอง ผมจะเริ่มจากการบิด พับ แล้วสังเกตสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น ในกรอบการทำงานว่าจะใช้การแทรกแซงให้น้อยที่สุด”
สำหรับงานนิทรรศการในครั้งนี้ที่ เซรินเดีย แกลเลอรี่ กรุงเทพฯ ทาชิ บราเอน เลือกใช้กระดาษเป็นเครื่องมือสื่อกระบวนการทำงานดังกล่าว งานที่จะจัดแสดง ได้แก่ ผลงานภาพถ่าย ชื่อ Untitled (ภาพถ่ายที่แสดงเป็นภาพ 360 องศา) ที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นในปีนี้ จุดเด่นของวัสดุที่นำมาใช้คือลักษณะพื้นผิวหยาบของโฟโต้บอร์ด แต่ละมุมมิได้บรรจบกันอย่างแม่นยำ ทั้งที่ทำได้ไม่ยากในกระบวนการแต่งภาพ ทว่า บราเอนเลือกหน้าตาซื่อๆ ของรูปเรขาคณิตเป็นสุนทรียะในการแสดงภาพ
ผลงานภาพสีเหลืองชิ้นใหญ่บนกระดาษ (Relief 1+ 2) บนผนังหลักของแกลเลอรี่ เขียนด้วยสีอะครีลิค เป็นงานนูนต่ำ ที่ผสมผสานระหว่างประติมากรรมและจิตรกรรมเข้าด้วยกัน สอดรับกับผลงานสองชิ้นที่ติดตั้งบนผนังอีกฟาก
"There is a crack in everything No.1" และ "There is a crack in everything No.2" เป็นผลงานล่าสุดของบราเอน เขาพัฒนางานจากความผิดพลาดและความบังเอิญที่เกิดขึ้นในสตูดิโอ จากการเห็นสุนทรียะในรอยฉีกรอยแยกของกระดาษ ซึ่งเขาเห็นว่าความฉับพลันของการฉีกขาดให้อารมณ์ที่คล้ายคลึงกับความฉับพลันในงานจิตรกรรม ด้วยว่ามันตรงไปตรงมาและอาจสื่อสารกับผู้ชมได้ทันที
ทาชิ บราเอน พำนักและทำงานอยู่ในเมืองซูริค ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ หลังจบจาก HGKZ (เดิมคือ Zurich University of the Arts) เขาศึกษาต่อและสำเร็จการศึกษาจากสถาบันศิลปะ Institut Kunst FHNW เมืองบาเซิล ในปี ค.ศ. 2010 ผลงานของเขาได้รับการจัดแสดงในหอศิลป์และพิพิธภัณฑ์ในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ฝรั่งเศส และ สหรัฐอเมริกา ได้แก่ Kunsthaus Steffisburg (2016), Kunstmuseum Thun (2015), Kunstmuseum Bern (2013), FABRIKculture ในเมืองเฮเกนไฮม์ (2013), หอศิลป์แห่งเมืองแบร์น (2012), CentrePasquArt ในเมืองบีล (2012) และ Museum Bärengasse ในซูริค (2012)
