มหาวีร์ สวามี นับเป็นศิลปินแบบประเพณีที่มีฝีมือวิจิตรที่สุดคนหนึ่งของอินเดียปัจจุบันเขาสืบทอดศิลปะการเขียนภาพสกุลพิกาเนร์จากบิดาและปู่ ทั้งเป็นศิษย์ของเวทพล ศรมา จิตรกรเอกผู้ก่อตั้ง Bannu Studio แห่งเมืองชัยปุระ ราชสถาน ผลงานของเขารื้อฟื้นลักษณะอันวิจิตรของจิตรกรรมสกุลพิกาเนร์ไปพร้อมกับการสร้างเอกลักษณ์ของตนเอง
นิทรรศการครั้งนี้เป็นผลงานชุดคัดสรรของศิลปิน ที่น่าสนใจโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งผลงานที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากวัฒนธรรมเอเซียตะวันออก มหาวีร์เขียนภาพแนวภูมิทัศน์จีนที่ให้กลิ่นอายจิตรกรรมสมัยราชวงซ่งและฝีมือจิตรกรในราชสำนัก มหาวีร์สามารถถ่ายทอดผลงานเหล่านี้ได้โดยรักษาลักษณะเฉพาะของศิลปะ Miniature ของอินเดีย ซึ่งล้วนโดดเด่นในเส้นสีฝีแปรงสื่อสะท้อนมิติด้านในของศิลปินที่ลึกซึ้งละเอียดอ่อน

แบบประเพณีหรือร่วมสมัยเป็นแต่คำเรียก เพราะประเพณีที่ร่ำรวยวิจิตรเมื่อเติมด้วยลมหายใจที่สดใหม่ย่อมต่อสายมีชีวิตอยู่ข้ามพ้นกาลเวลา
Mahaveer Swami (b. 1959) is one of the finest traditional artists working in India today. He is descended from a family of traditional Bikaner painters. As a child he began training with his father M.R. Swami and grandfather M.D. Swami. Later he studied under late Vedpal Sharma “Bannu” in Jaipur. Mahaveer Swami revived the best aspects of the sophisticated and refined Bikaner School of painting with an originality and brilliance unique among contemporary miniaturists.
In this show a unique selection across his works were selected. Particularly striking are his works on Chinese landscapes which are reminiscent of the finest Song-dynasty painters and other imperial works. Others encompasses traditional Indian miniaturist subjects as well as mythology, and cross-cultural themes.
His ethereal colours and exquisite brushwork are combined with inner vision and great sensitivity of the world around him. The works possess finely tuned technique and rigorous discipline of his tradition. Mahaveer Swami proves that there is no real gap between contemporary and traditional, there is only art. His work demonstrates beyond a doubt that a rich and beautiful tradition is still very much alive.
