The Oldest Road - TEN CANOES (2006, Rolf de Heer).
You might think your road’s different to my road, you might even think you walk a different road, one I might not know. You might think you’ve got yourself just a brand new road, that’s never been walked before, but a lot of people have walked a lot of roads and I bet someone’s walked your road a long time before you have.
Ten Canoes is the first film that’s entirely Aboriginal language. It’s a fable of misbegotten love, longing, respect, revenge and tradition. But it’s not to lump it in as anachronistic or ham-fistedly conservative. It’s brilliant, beautifully shot contemporary cinema.
