The exhibition will be at the gallery until 30th May.

Artist Statement

Since its origins nude photography has been inspiring an endless debate: could it be considered art or obscenity? However, it might no matter where the truth is. Nude photography can assimilate a communication value. Indeed, nudity itself has more latent meanings: self-expression, emotional side of a person, freedom, authenticity, identity as human beings, and so on. Looking at some photos of nudes they may not be immediately comprehensible. Like a puzzle, you have to look them twice, then think what the photographer was willing to communicate. Photography has its own reason to be and it has many dimensions and interpretations. And some photography cannot be explain in words, so you have to use your own feelings and judgement.
If clothes wrap the body, the skin wraps the soul. We don’t know anything if we see only the cover. This is true, “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Maybe this is the reason why I am interested in human beings and in who they really are, as much as I’m infatuated with human skin. That’s why I take photographs of nude people.
There is a direct communicative mood between me and the model. Sometimes it comes from my personal story, and my desire to express opinions through my work of which nudity is a part of it. Sometimes I show who the model really is from my point of view.
I don’t have rules in photography. Maybe just one: nudity is a form of communication. I believe that each photography’s form gives me a different result. I just decide to use which one is the right form for my work, based on the final result.

ไม่ว่าเพราะอะไร ก่อให้เกิดการเริ่มต้นของการถ่ายภาพนู้ด แต่มันไม่ใช่เรื่องสำคัญไปมากกว่า เราต้องการใช้ภาพนู้ดสื่อสารอะไร พอกล่าวถึงภาพเปลือย คำถามของคนส่วนใหญ่ก็จะมีเพียงแค่ “ ศิลปะ หรือ อนาจาร” แต่ทั้งๆที่จริงๆแล้ว การเปลือยมันมีความหมายแฝงอื่นมากกว่านั้น ไม่ว่าการจะพูดถึงตัวตน จิตวิญญาณ ความเป็นมนุษย์ ความอิสระ การส่งสาร
ดังนั้นภาพนู้ด บางภาพไม่ใช่แค่มองด้วยตาแล้วจะเข้าใจ แต่มันเป็นเหมือนปริศนา ที่จะต้องมองและคิด ไตร่ตรองอย่างเหมาะสม เพราะใดๆในโลกล้วนมีเรื่องราวและมีหลายด้าน และบางภาพก็ไม่อธิบายเป็นคำพูดให้เข้าใจได้ แต่ต้องใช้ความรู้สึก
ถ้าเปรียบเสื้อผ้าเป็นสิ่งที่ห่อหุ้มร่างกาย ผิวหนังมนุษย์ก็คงเปรียบเสมือนสิ่งที่ห่อหุ้มจิตวิญญาณ เราไม่มีทางรู้อะไรเลย ถ้าเรามองกันเพียงผิวเผิน
อาจจะเป็นเพราะว่าฉันเป็นคนสนใจในความคิดของมนุษย์ การค้นหาตัวตนของคนที่ฉันได้พบเจอหรือสัมผัส พอๆกับหลงใหลในผิวมนุษย์
ดังนั้นการบันทึกภาพของ .. ฉัน ..
เปรียบเสมือนการแสดงออกของการสื่อสารระหว่างตัวฉันเองกับแบบ ในบางครั้งฉันก็เล่าเรื่องของตัวเอง แสดงในสิ่งที่ฉันคิด ผ่านภาพถ่ายที่มีแบบเปลือยเป็นส่วนประกอบในภาพ และบางครั้งฉันก็แสดงตัวตนของแบบในความคิดของฉันผ่านงานของฉันเอง
ฉันไม่มีรูปแบบในการถ่ายภาพ มีเเพียงรูปแบบในการสื่อสาร คือการใช้ภาพเปลือยเป็นสื่อกลาง เพราะฉันเชื่อว่า แต่ละรูปแบบของการถ่ายภาพ มันให้ผลลัพธ์ที่ต่างกัน ฉันแค่เลือกใช้รูปแบบตามผลลัพธ์ที่ฉันอยากจะได้ อยากจะสื่อสารเท่านั้นอง


The Artist

Sophirat Muangkum (1983) lives and works in Bangkok.
Her works have been exhibited, among the others, at Bangkok Art & Cultural Center (BACC), Photo Fair Thailand at BITEC (Bangkok), Midnice Gallery (Bangkok), Radisson Blu (Bangkok), KUDETA (Bangkok), Rebel Art Space (Bangkok).
Sophirat’s images have been published and featured on VOGUE Italia, ThaiPBS, Play Magazine Thailand, Zoomaa Norway, KALTBLUT Magazine (Germany), Blast Magazine Thailand and other.
