The film follows Paul Hackett (played by Griffin Dunne), an ordinary computer data entry worker who ventures to the SoHo neighborhood late at night to meet a strange woman. However, his simple late-night outing quickly spirals into a bizarre, absurd nightmare as he becomes trapped in an inescapable chain of unfortunate events, eccentric locals, and paranoid misunderstandings that prevent him from returning home.
