ปี 1885 กองทัพอังกฤษบุกพม่าและเนรเทศพระเจ้าธีบอออกจากแผ่นดิน เป็นการสิ้นสุดยุคกษัตริย์ที่ปกครองพม่ามายาวนานถึงพันปี เหล่าพระราชวงศ์ต่างถูกลืมเลือน ขณะที่บ้านเกิดเมืองนอนก็ตกอยู่ในภาวะสงครามและอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของกองทัพต่อมาอีกยาวนาน กระทั่งเวลาผ่านพ้น ครอบครัวของพระองค์จึงได้กลับมาพบกันใหม่ในดินแดนที่ซึ่งทุกสิ่งได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไปแล้วอย่างสิ้นเชิง

อเล็กซ์ เบสโคบี้ ใช้เวลาตามถ่ายความพลิกผันเหล่านี้ในประเทศเมียนมาร์กว่า 3 ปี ผลที่ได้คือ "We Were Kings" ภาพยนตร์สารคดีที่ควรชมอย่างยิ่งสำหรับใครก็ตามที่อยากเข้าใจสังคมพม่าในปัจจุบัน ผ่านเรื่องราวประวัติศาสตร์สำคัญที่ทั้งเราและชาวโลกส่วนใหญ่แทบไม่เคยได้รับรู้
