Lights from thousands of candles twinkle on the water. Each one carries prayers and wishes sent off to float down rivers and streams through their Krathongs.
Each year, Thais celebrate their traditional festival called “Loy Krathong” to thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the Full-Moon Day of the Twelfth Lunar Month. It usually falls in November in Western calenday. The word Loi Krathong could be translated as “to float a basket”, and comes from the tradition of making a decorated basket, which are then floated on a river. Loy means “to float”, Krathong means “a circular floating basket decorated with banana leaves, flowers, a candle and incense sticks”.
This year, the Loi Krathong festival will take place on Friday, November 3rd. We have prepared a list of our recommended locations to Loy your Krathong!
