Mahidol University College of Music and Neilson Hays Library present Salaya in the City, a classical duet performance by Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra principal flutist Hiroshi Matsushima and Polish-American guitarist Paul Cesarcsyk. Their program includes pieces spanning continents and centuries:

ABOUT HIROSHI MATSUSHIMA

Hiroshi Matsushima became the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal flutist in 2010. Having begun playing flute at the age of 15, studied at Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo, Mozarteum University of Salzburg (Austria) and University of Music Karlsruhe (Germany), where he completed his master's of music in flute performance and chamber music. He has played with the Asian Youth Orchestra, Hof Symphony, Munich Symphony, Munich Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonia of the Nations.

Hiroshi has been a faculty member of Mahidol University College of Music since 2002. In addition to playing with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Matsushima plays solo and chamber performances in Japan, Asia and Europe.

ABOUT PAUL CESARCZYK

Polish born American guitarist Paul Cesarczyk made his New York City debut at the age of 17 at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and has performed throughout Europe, the US and Asia. He has appeared in concert with Speculum Musicae, The Claremont Ensemble, the New York City Opera Orchestra, the Manhattan Virtuosi, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Cremona Festival Orchestra and as a founding member of the Manhattan Guitar Quartet.

Mr. Cesarczyk is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Andres Segovia Award, the Aaron Copland prize from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), the Artists International Award, a Kosciuszko Foundation Prize and an award for artistic excellence from the NY State Senate. His arrangement of music by His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand can be heard on Ekachai Jaerakul’s recent guitar recording.

Mr. Cesarczyk studied at the prestigious La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Manhattan School of Music and doctor of musical arts at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Since 2009, Mr. Cesarczyk has served as the department chair at Mahidol University, College of Music in Thailand.
