A monthly cultural studies session hosted by university lecturer and author Viriya Sawangchot. This session we will be screening Fran Lambrick’s documentary "I Am Chut Wutty”, telling the story of the Chut Wutty’s dedication to protect Cambodian forests and the livelihoods dependent upon.

Screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a casual discussion.

►I AM CHUT WUTTY
Chut Wutty was a Cambodian environmental activist in. He led the Natural Resource Protection Group, protesting illegal deforestation and military involvement in protected forest areas, Prey Lang forest. On 26 April 2012, after confrontations with the military, Chut Wutty was shot and killed. He was 40 years old at that time. The investigation, however, was unsuccessful and the case was closed. Telling the story of the activist’s dedication to protect Cambodian forests and the livelihoods dependent upon them, filmmaker Fran Lambrick spoke to Chut just before his death—and followed the Prey Lang Network’s response in the wake of his murder.

►ABOUT THE DIRECTORS
Fran Lambrick is ethnobiologist and filmmaker. From 2009-2014, she was at Oxford research community forestry in Cambodia and did her fieldwork in the Prey Lang forest in northern Cambodia. During the many months fieldwork there, she met Chut Wutty and learned to know the stories of forest activists, villagers who lost their land, and rubber plantation workers.

Vanessa de Smet (co-director) is a Belgian documentary photographer who spent her last several years working in Asia. She has been moving towards multimedia projects, keeping her focus on in depth stories related to social and environmental issues. Her documentary short, Greenhorse Bluesun, explores the Mongolian modern art scene.

►VIRIYA SAWANGCHOT
A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
