A monthly cultural studies session hosted by university lecturer and author Viriya Sawangchot. This session, “Sunflower Occupation”, is a collaboration documentary featuring the stories and timeline of events during this student-led “Sunflower Movement” in Taiwan in 2014. The Sunflower Student Movement, driven by a coalition of students and civic groups, protested the passing of the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement by the Kuomintang party in the legislature without a clause-by-clause review. The occupation lasted 24 days between March 18 and April 10, 2014.
Sunflower Occupation is produced by Taipei Documentary Filmmakers’ Union. It is the first collective project supported by the union that officially founded by documentary filmmakers in 2006.
Screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a casual discussion.

A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
