"Making Compliance Work: Challenges and Innovations"

From 12 to 14 October 2018, CPG will host its 9th Annual International Conference: “Making Compliance Work: Challenges and Innovations” at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel Bangkok.

‘Compliance’ is a central issue in private and public organizations alike. In general, it is the endeavor to ensure that rules and norms are observed, and risks of non-compliance mitigated. To this end, compliance management systems (CMS) are developed and implemented that integrate values, rules, practices, protocols and tools which are defined for a concrete operational environment. Obviously, the rapidly spreading CMS have to be more than just another set of rules that has to be implemented and monitored as much as the original norms which CMS are supposed to realize.

Starting from here, the conference raises the question of what makes compliance work and what does not. One theme in this regard, is the tension between universalistic legal norms supposed to be globally enforced on the one hand and countervailing realities in terms of value systems and practices on the ground on the other. We will discuss if it is wishful thinking dangerously disregarding local actualities to try to enforce such universalistic legal norms everywhere with the same compliance tool kit, and whether there are ways to successfully translate between diverging contexts without getting lost in translation.

Another question to explore pertains to those actors who are pushing compliance forward in their work, in particular the agenda setters and enforcers of compliance. Here, we will hear about the obstacles they face and the strategies they develop to overcome them.

Further discussed will be the potentials in transferring experiences from other fields than law and economics into the discussion to help raising it to the next level. To this end, we will draw especially on insights from psychological and military perspectives.

To illuminate all these and other questions we have gathered a group of highly competent speakers, both working conceptually or at the coalface. Among these innovative experts from theory and practice are academics, members of watchdog bodies, senior officers and business managers.
