The film follows Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson), a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the off-season caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, moving there with his wife and young son who possesses psychic abilities. As winter sets in and the family becomes snowed in, the hotel's sinister supernatural forces begin to unravel Jack's sanity, driving him into a violent rampage against his own family.
